The bandwidth required depends on the quality and bitrate of the broadcast, the streaming platform and whether we are using a primary and backup connection.
For example, YouTube’s current recommended H.264 bitrate for a 1080p 30fps live stream is around 10 Mbps, while LinkedIn recommends up to 6 Mbps for 1080p live video and recommends at least 10 Mbps upload speed for reliable streaming.
However, simply having a fast internet connection doesn’t guarantee a reliable live stream. Upload speed, network stability, venue infrastructure and other users sharing the connection can all affect performance.
We therefore assess connectivity as part of the planning process and can provide dedicated or backup connectivity where required. Site visits are recommended where possible.
We can build redundancy into the streaming system where possible. During two recent events in Dublin, for example, the primary connection was backed up using Starlink to reduce the risk of an interruption to the broadcast.
